An annual well-woman exam is an exam offered to women to review some basic elements of their reproductive health. It is recommended and advisable to be done once a year for all women starting from the age of 18years and above. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, if you’re over 21 but under 29, you should have a pelvic exam done once a year. This yearly visit should include a Well Woman exam which comprises of breast examination, a pelvic examination and a pap-smear for cervical screening but may also include other procedures like cancer screening, health screening, sexually transmitted diseases, concerns about sex, weight control, issues with menstrual period and preconception counselling.
The Pap smear is the test we use to find pre-cancer cells in the cervix before cancer develops
Most Gynaecologists recommend having a Pap smear every three years if their patients’ previous screening tests were normal.
